Description: Building a Barrier-Free Campus traces how UT Arlington became a model accessible campus for students with disabilities starting in the mid-1960s—a time when disabled students had no right to attend K-12 schools or college—and how disabled students and alums helped drive disability rights activism and adapted sports in Texas and beyond. Curated by Trevor Engel and Sarah F. Rose and available in both digital format (with full text description) and in-person format, the exhibit draws on dozens of oral histories collected as part of UTA Libraries’ award-winning Texas Disability History Collection.

Description: On July 9, 2020 Interim President Teik C. Lim announced eight specific commitments to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at UTA. Between 2020 and 2023, UTA allocated resources to fulfill those commitments such as hiring a Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; creating a committee on diversity, equity, and inclusion; developing a plan to recruit, retain, and promote underrepresented staff; creating scholarship opportunities; promoting diversity training for faculty and staff; incorporating curriculum focused on identity, privilege, bias, and oppression; reviewing UTA Police Department policies. TX Senate Bill 17 was introduced to the 88th Legislature Regular Session on March 10, 2023. SB17 banned colleges and universities from maintaining an office of diversity, equity, and inclusion and mandating staff to take diversity training or provide statements describing their commitment to diversity. The bill passed on May 29, 2023. It was signed into law on June 17, 2023 and went into effect on January 1, 2024. The University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion page was removed from the UTA website in 2023 and is no longer captured.
